I'm a little scared and a little excited, but mainly worried I might lose something important in the transition (eg, the ability to use my bank apps or something similar).

This is the slavery Google has silently imposed on all of us. 😔

For app compatibility install plexus on your current phone

It can tell you if the apps, also the apps your have installed right now work well with microG (open source implementation of google services used by /e/os among others ) or without anything.

Very useful to anticipate issues
